The Hermit is a performance piece for solo Oboe and Violin (I&II), Viola (I&II), Cello (I&II), and Contrabass. Performance time-3:38.

This is the first non-choral work composed by Daniel J Hay from the original hand-written score. The hand-written score was located after the loss of nearly 300 pieces of music during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The Oboe theme was provided by Debbie Ridge as a 12-tone melody. The original score was completed in 1975 and recovered in 2008. Only minor modifications were made by Hay prior to publication.
